When trying to log onto public or other wifi networks I nearly always get this – lots of discussions on google – none seem to have this sorted, anyone with moto G 2nd generation has this and solved it?

Not sure about this issue. The cause for each accident may be different, although the syndrome is similar (not connected). As I know, there are no serious bugs on wifi connection in Moto G 2014.
Did you get any specific errors?
