Is there a way to do a plain old fashioned directory based file search? The gui method sucks blue mud. I cannot find downloads that even the phone says exist. The “search” box is useless.

    Thanks!

Did you use the pre-installed Files app? For older devices, you need to install the Files by Google app.

can you receive calls or make calls?

If you can make calls, but still cannot receive SMS after a reboot, you may check with your phone company. Probably, you messed up the message centre settings. The support technician can send you the configurations and you just need to confirm to apply.

It is about moving apps to SD card for Mote E 2nd gen (Australia). The Apps list does not show “Downloads”, “SD card”. The Apps list only shows “All Apps” and then individual apps listed. Under “Settings” in Apps (to get there it requires to open the menu on the top right-hand corner of Apps), it shows only ‘Eject”, and two version of Format, no SD Card. NO Individual App shows “Move to SD” or any SD card. No mention of SD in the whole App page. No Apps mention on the SD card tab in the Storage and USB page of the Settings.

I have just bought a Moto G5 dual sim for use in the uk. It was purchased sim free as no network offers dual sim phones in the uk. I want to set it up so that I use one sim under normal circumstances but when I am not accessible through that sim (due to poor network coverage ) it will Divert the call to my second sim which will be on a different network (pay as you go). How do I set the phone up to do this as I can’t see anything about call Divert in the phone settings

Open Phone app, tap the menu key (3 vertical dots near top right, right to the mic icon), tap Settings, tap calls, then tap call forwarding.

You can also ask your carrier to set the call forwarding when you not reachable, or are busy.

Please note, call forwarding will cost you as if you dial the number.

    Hello Team,

    I hope you’re well 🙂

I bought a Moto G 2e Dual SIM Mobile a while ago and I’ve had a persistent issue with it from almost day one.

I cannot take photos on the phone itself or install Apps from the Play Store (I could originally install Apps for a little while, but I could never take photos).

Its says “Insufficient Storage / Please free Internal Memory…blah blah blah”…….BUT, I actually have over half of the Internal Storage left, which is at least 7Gb free. I shifted everything I could to the External Storage 6 months ago, another 16gb SD Card, but it’s still showed the same error.

Thankyou kindly in advance for any suggestions or advice. I’m having a hard time researching a fix for this on my own.

    Best Regards.

In camera app, when SD card is present, you can set the storage location for photos. Did you double check the storage location settings.

You may also back up the phone and try a factory data reset.

I would not recommend this. You should rely on screen lock. Phone is a personal device, and you should not hand it to others if you are not comfortable to do so.

Anyway, you can try es file explorer. It does allow you to set up a password for a folder or hide a folder. But I personally do not recommend you to use this feature.

You are probably using Moto Assist. Both home assist and drive assist have the option to announcing the incoming calls.

Did you try it with Google camera? If you still cannot get the front camera, you may have to backup the phone and try a factory days reset. It can also be caused by hardware issues. In this case, you have to send the phone to local Motorola service center to check and fix it.

Moto G 3rd Gen after 6m update. How do I transfer WhatsApp photos from my phone to PC? My internal memory is full, despite having SD card with 32mg. (What a waste that was!) Don’t want to lose photos. When connected via USB shows on PC but says nothing to transfer. Have downloaded Motorola Device Manager but won’t load onto screen. Phone is absolute rubbish after marshmallow 6. Will be ditching asap. Very disappointing.

How did you get the message ” says nothing to transfer”?

You need check the phone storage in Windows explorer. You also need unlock the screen, swipe down to get notifications, tap the USB notification, change to MTP. it is not necessary to open Motorola device manager. You must install it because it has the necessary USB driver of Moto phones for Windows machines.

For SD card, it is a problem of WhatsApp, which does not support SD card. For Android marshmallow, you can use use SD card as internal storage so that you will not get insufficient internal storage issues. Please read this page to know how to use SD card after Marshmallow update.

        Did you use SD card?

Anyway, if there are enough space, you can reboot the phone to see whether it helps.

If the status bar and notification panel still disappear after rebooting, very likely, the updating process was interrupted unexpectedly. You need backup the phone, and try a factory data reset.

You can access reset option in Settings app.It is not necessary through notification.

You can also reset the phone in recovery mode.

Remember to backup your files before resetting.

Shutter sound fire camera app settings were removed in Moto G Marshmallow update in most regions. You can use set volume to minimum to stop shutter sound of camera app.

However, I play Game of War: Fire Age, and the phone has been going very slowly for the last month. It freezes in certain areas of the . I have cleared the cache partition, and it still acts the same. It used to run the game beautifully. Any advice?

Did the developer update the game recently?

It can also be caused by some other apps. You may try Greenify app to put non active apps into deep sleep.

When I tried to use the device manager from other device, my phone only says it is locked by android device manager but does not let me type the new key. Also I am not prompted for forgot password using my gmail account in my moto g as well. Please suggest is there is a way to unlock the pattern without resetting the phone

Pattern lock always has a backup password. If you tried a few times, it should ask you to use the backup password.

Android device manager is for you to lock and to wipe the phone. The unlock feature was removed long time ago for legal reasons.

    Hi Simon,

Some time ago my contact pics were not sync’ing properly with google so I cleared cache and system data and in g+ app settings checked “Keep contacts up to date” and my problem was solved. I noticed a strange thing later, my contacts were merged automatically across complete phone book. This was random, contact a was merged with b with apparently no logic connecting them. For some contacts the email id only contact were merged with other phone numbers. When I manually separate the contact they get merged with other contact and I have to do “separate” at 2 3 places before they become individual contacts as they should be. Then again it shows 2 names for same contact, one with google account, one with whatsapp. Though I remember earlier this was not the case. When you open a contact there will be whatsapp contact and google contact both together.

Do you know why this would have occurred ?
How to fix this so no more merging happens ?

I have unchecked the option in g+ which I enabled earlier.

Cast screen is for Chromecast on Nexus devices. You can now enable it in Chromecast app on Moto G.

This community do not discuss about rooting as it voids warranty in most regiond. You may check some developer communities.

You cannot. Android doesn’t offer rolling back options.

You can visit local Motorola service center and they may flush the old system for you. Don’t do it yourself unless you are very sure what you are doing and possible consequences.

You can uninstall updates for the apps, not updates for the system.

You can enable/turn on Google keyboard on settings – apps.

You can backup all pics to Google server throng photos app.

Is your area covered by 3g? Does your plan include 3g access?

How to know if my Moto G 1st gen with lollipop 5.0.2 is connected to data while in roaming? Earlier when I was having kitkat version, i was able to see it in the main screen itself.

When I contacted the customer care, I was told that it is the ‘feature’ of Lollipop that it will not show if the phone is connected to data while roaming. Is it true?

      You can disable data roaming.

I am not sure whether it displays any additional info if data roaming is enabled.

Settings– Apps– Camera, tap clear cache, tap clear data. The try again.

You can also try it with third-party camera apps, e.g., camera360, to see whether you can switch cameras.

If you haven’t reboot ed the phone, you can reboot it to see whether it helps.

After upgrading to lollipop, the contact photo is not displayed while incoming call. The photo is appearing very dim with blacked over shade. When I attend the call, the photo is displayed properly then. There is no problem in displaying photo in outgoing calls. How to fix this? We are keeping the contact photo to see our loved ones when they call but it is not useful.

You can reboot the phone into normal mode after the test.

Do you get any icons related to mobile data? What happens if you use one sim card only?

Please note, this is just a community site and is not affiliated to motorola. You need check with local service centre if you need check your phone.

Moto G only allows you to clear the whole list. There is no filter for incoming or outgoing.

You probably have delete them manually one by one in the call history.

    I am using moto g 1st generation ,
I have a query , I normally keep the background data off on my phone to restrict excessive data usage , but it happen quiet often that the background data gets enabled on its own and I have to switch it off again manually
Is this normal ? and is there any way to turn background data off without it getting enabled on its own ?

It is not normal. it should change only when you restart the phone.

Anyway, a better option is to disable mobile data when not in use. Also, set a warning level based on your plan. Restricting background data will break some apps.

Does this happen to all contacts or some contacts? Did you have some special setting for the contact? You can check the settings in Contacts app. Open the contact, tap the menu key (top right), tap set ringtone.

Anyway, you can backup your phone, then factory reset the phone. Or you can visit local service centre. Very likely, they will reset your phone as well. So backup your phone before visiting them.

I am using moto g 1st gen phone bought from India. After lollipop update, I feel phone is a little slow. Any remedies apart from backuo & reset ? One more issue with the brightness slider in quick settings ( that come when sliding finger down on screen ), on sliding it to left most side the brightness goes to 0, as if the screen is off. I confirmed from one nexus 4 user but they say that on their phone the brightness doesn’t go to 0. Normally also the brightness should go to minimum and not to 0. Any ideas ?

For the slowness, you can clear the cache partition. We will post a guide on how to do this week. The procedures are slightly different from KitKat.

For brightness, it depends on ambient conditions if you turned on Adaptive brightness (settings–Display).

If you want to get consistent brightness when slide the slider to the left, you need turn off Adaptive brightness. (normally, you should not turned off it)

For the icons, what’s shown in the quick settings? You need turn off WiFi to get the icons.

For the speaker issue, you probably trapped the speaker button.

It should not take so long. But it may depend on how many emails you have. For Gmail, it also depends on your internet connections.

If you want to record your Mic in your Moto G, you can use any voice recording app in Play store.

If you want to record Moto G phone calls, no, there is no solution. Android disabled this feature. It is also illegal to record phone talk with consent from the other party in many regions.

      You can turn off wifi.

You need a mobile data connection to connect to Google server. is mobile data enabled in your SIM card? (you should see some data connection icons like 3G, H or H+ if mobile data connection is active.)

You need go to your Google account on the web to set your calendar. In the calendar app on the phone, you can only add India holidays if you specify your location in India.

Alternatively, you can download Google calendar app, which allows you select the country.

Messages centre number is saved in the SIM card. You seldom should change it.

Moto G does not provide any facility for you to change such things in SIM card. If you really need change it manually, you can do so in other phones (most Nokia and Samsung phones allow you top change this number).

You can call the tech support of your phone company. They can send you a MMS with all settings. You just apply the MMS message to update all settings.

Usb tethering is for pc to use mobile data.

Your moto g cannot use internet connection in your pc by default. You need something called ‘reversed usb tethering’. But it’s very complicated and dependent on your pc settings.

Dear Simon, a question about default language/spell checker. I bought my Moto G (2013) in the Netherlands. I have everything that can be set to local (Amsterdam time, Dutch language, … you name it) for here in Holland where I live. However, if I write a text, as for an email, it doesn’t know Dutch since it asks for every word “double click to add it to your language library” (it says that in Dutch); it appears like the only language it supports is English. What did I do wrong in my settings or what did I forget to set right somewhere? My language settings clearly show Dutch (Nederlands) only and no English is marked anywhere where I can see. Any idea? Thank you. Robert

Simon, that’s exactly what I did, months ago and verified just now: everything is set to Dutch (Nederlands), the Language, the spellchecker, the input, possible voice input (never used) and the standard Android keyboard (there is no Google keyboard option), everything I can possibly find, including Google maps (for location), etc. etc. But email input keeps saying “tick twice to add this word to your library”; it does that for every word; in other words it doesn’t know Dutch.

there is no Google keyboard option. The only option which is grey and cannot be changed therefore is “Android keyboard – AOSP”. I found a solution! I added a second language: English (US). This adds the language selection button to the keyboard. Now, if I select Dutch, everything is OK. Erasing English as a second language, leaving Dutch only: the problem returns. So it’s probably a bug in the software.

Anyway, if your PC have wireless adapter, or you are using WiFi, it would be easy. You can try SuperBeam (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.majedev.superbeam&hl=en). It has several possible connection modes. The only requirement is that your PC has a wireless adapter.

Are you being locked out of the phone?

If yes, if it is locked by PIN or pattern, it should ask you alternative password. If you forget your alternative password, after 5 tries, you can then unlock it with your Google account password.

Anyway, you can always unlock the phone with your Google account in Android device manager on a PC. Please Google “Android device manager”.

If you want to reset the phone, you can go to Settings–backup &reset– Factory data reset. Please backup your data before resetting.

If the app was pre-installed by your carrier, you can not uninstall it. You probably can only turn it off in settings- apps – all. If you’re carrier declares it’s essential, you even cannot disable it (turn off).

If you installed it from play store, you can always uninstall it from settings- apps.

Dear Simon, I have a very particular app problem. I own a BMW i3 (pure electric). BMW has an app to see the status of the car, change settings, charge times, etc. It’s called “BMW i Remote” app in Google Play. It works on other mobiles but NOT on Moto G. Screen says: this app cannot be used in your region. Why not? BMW’s app is only one and universal. I live in the Netherlands. I have two other make mobiles at home and both have no problem. BMW Netherlands has never heard about this problem.

      I have no clue either.

Does it allow you to install it? If you cannot install, BMW can always send you the apk file to install directly.

But if it doesn’t allow you to run, it’s probably the app problem.

Dear Simon, Murphy’s law at work. After days of trying, contacts with BMW, the solution came hours after my plea to you. For an unknown reason, unsolved yet, my computer and Moto G go to a US version of the app store, downloading the US app version from BMW, although I have my computer and Moto G set to “Netherlands” and Dutch language. I transferred the same working app from one of my other mobiles (not using the app store in Google Play) and that one works on Moto G. I noticed one difference: the app store app contains the letters US in the version, while the working one contains ECE in its version. Again in Google Play, only one single version shows up.

Simon I wish to thank you for continuous hands-on useable answers to the many questions directed at you; I’ve seen many sites where the genius answering gives worthless answers and keeps telling people that they don’t know what they’re dong and that their product is the best: useless. But not with you: keep up the good work and thanks Motorola for allowing you. Robert.

You can, but it’s inconvenient. You can skip the Google account setup.

But workout a Google account, you cannot install/update apps from play store, you cannot unlock the phone with Google account in case you forget your lock screen password………

Any reasons for not having a Google account?

I am not sure about whether it is caused by the SIM card or the phone.

But anyway, if your SIM card can be recognized, your phone company can always send you a message with correct settings for sms and mms. If the sim card is not recognized, you can check whether the SIM card is inserted tightly. Then check with the phone company.

For the phone, you can backup your data and do a factory data reset. This will erase all your data and settings.

When you go to notifications and press top right you see no service with full bar too. Instead of just restart the phone when this happen I just go to settings / dual sim settings then disable and reenable the sim.

My copy paste function not performing well anymore? Why? I use to be able copy from any app and psdte elsewhere, not anymore? What happened? Then MMS not working? And when I want to fwd an MMS as an SMS…guess what? Nope? Why such basic function not working?

I think some apps block copy and paste function. It’s up to the app developer.

You can only forward MMS as MMS, not sms even you remove the media, as I know.

Read some of the replies.. Very helpful…Unfortunately could not find what I was looking for..

When I get a call..the music does not stop automatically if I’m using my headphones to listen to songs..so most of the times I end up missing calls..as I don’t that I call came in the middle of music

Is there any setting to fix this?

if you are using Play Music, it should pause the music and you should hear the ringtone. For other players, it may ignore it.

Anyway, you can always choose “vibrate when ringing” under settings–sound. Also, you may check the volume for ringtone.

It’s not an easy job to recover the files. If the data are critical, you may have to find some professional service providers to do it for you. Again, it’s very expensive and they don’t guaranteed anything.

You cannot change anything saved in the SIM card in Moto G. You have to use other phones (e.g., Samsung phones) to change, then put it back to Moto G.

You can also ask the tech support of your phone company and apply the MMS they send to you.

BTW, normally, you should not modify such numbers…..

Android doesn’t support minimize windows. When you tap the home button, current app is stopped. If the phone has sufficient ram, the state will be saved in the ram. So when you try to access the app next time, most apps can resume.

But if the ram is low, the memory is released for other apps and you cannot resume.

Some apps doesn’t support such caching feature at all.

Some android vendors (Samsung, LG) now advertise multi window feature. This requires more ram and only limited apps are supported. They don’t support minimizing window either.

Is there a way to fix this or is it a phone issue, network issue, etc? Thanks.

The emergency mode is related to the sim card or the carrier network. Very often, this is caused by the contact between the sim card and the card slot. If you trimmed the card yourself, you may try to get the official micro sim.

Wifi is working fine though. I tried multiple reboots with data enabled/disabled configurations but to no avail. I had even tried setting “Preferred network type” to 2G as well (I only use 2G connection) from 3G and rebooted, but still didn’t help. You need specify the sim card for data connections under dual SIM settings. Did you check the settings there?

2G data will not work with voice. If possible, you should use 3G data so that both voice and data can be used.

You may give more details on the problem you encountered. It’s hard to guess what you are talking about, home screen? App drawer? Disappear or delayed display? How did you get the problem?

Backup your data and reset your phone (settings – backup and reset – factory data reset).

it depends on the apps you are using.

you can try ES File explorer, select the file, then choose share via bluetooth. For ES file explorer, you may try this guide: http://motoeguide.com/moto-e-guides/manage-files-moto-e-es-file-explorer-file-manager/

To install apk file directly or from other sources (not Google Play), go to Settings-security, check Unknown sources.

To delete any files, you need a file manager. You may try ES file explorer: http://motoeguide.com/moto-e-guides/manage-files-moto-e-es-file-explorer-file-manager/

The high percentage of cell standby usually is an indication of poor mobile signal. If you tap the cell standby, very likely, you will find relatively large percentage of “no signal” time.

Hi Simon, I have dragged and dropped music from my PC using WMP to my Moto g. I want to listen to my music offline which I can do through the Google Play Music app. However I am reluctant to post my credit card details so I cannot use this service free. I can see in the music in the music folder using ES Explorer but so far it has been inaccessible to me. Can you please suggest a free app that will satisfy my need?

You can try many music players on play store. For example, vlc for android is quite good. Mx player is also good. It all depends on your preference.

BTW, I don’t think you need provide credit card info to use play music app. It’s only needed of you want to download or buy music there.

Thank you Simon. I would rather use Play Music but I just tried to download the music manager programme to my PC (just realised that is how one does it!) but I am still requested to leave payment details even for the free standard service. I will now try one of your other suggestions and hope it works. Many thanks for your advice.

Play music was pre-installed in your Moto G. If it asks for account setup, you can always skip the payment info. If you don’t subscribe to the streaming service or buy/download music from the store, no payment info is needed.

Being a silver surfer I think that I must have messed up Play Music somehow. The first time I used Play music I managed to install some music on my device and all was well. Later I wanted to add another couple of albums to my library so, having ripped the music to my PC, I synced my device to my PC. At that stage I lost all the music from my library but not from the PC. However, the music was still in the music file. After that all attempts to get music into my library failed and that is when I sought your advice. Anyway, all is well now. I downloaded VLC for Android Beta and was up and running within a couple of clicks. The app recognised my music file immediately and I can now listen to my music offline. My tiny concern is that VLC is still in Beta mode but I know it is reputable. Many thanks for your help and advice.

My problem is with the POP emails coming to the Moto G from my ISP. My Moto G keeps deleting older messages so that I only see the last 4 or 5. While in the email inbox today, it synced and 3 new emails arrived but all the old ones (including unread) just disappeared and I can’t find any command button to look at all emails, only unread, inbox, deleted etc. The emails are not being deleted from the server even when I delete them from the Moto G and that is in accordance with the settings I have choseen. When I download emails onto my desktop PC email program, the messages are deleted from the server, but once they are on my Moto G I don’t believe they should then disappear when they are subsequently deleted from the server (they don’t disappear from my husband’s Galaxy Tab). Where are the emails going from my inbox and how can I find them again on the Moto G (other than going into my desktop PC).

It’s very likely due to the sync settings. Did you check the sync settings for that email account carefully?

You should find out the apps that use the data in Settigns–Data usage.

You can try to disable background data for the apps that consume a lot of data in Data usage, tap the app, then you can tap and confirm ‘Restrict background data’.

For apps you don’t need, you can uninstall (if it is installed by you) or you can disable them (if there are pre-installed).

You may try to reset the camera on settings – apps – all – camera, tap clear cache and clear data.

After resetting the camera, you can open camera app to see whether you can switch between rear and front.

Do you mean you want to put the first call on hold? If the call is from the other sim card (if you are using dial sim model), you cannot put the first one on hold to answer calls from the other sim. If it’s from the sim card, it depends on your carrier.

    Hi,

Every time i minimize a app like a game come back or reopens (even from task-bar) it restarts, losts all my progress in that game.

Eg. playing candy crush, a call comes and you minimize the game and when returns it restarts from fresh, progress and one life gone.

Not resuming from the same point.

    Plz guide a solution.

      August 1, 2014 at 10:34 am

There is no minimize function in Android. When you are using an app, tapping the home button will stop the app, not just minimize it. The app then may be shown as active if your phone has sufficient ram to keep it alive. Otherwise, it will be forced to close.

The behavior also depends on the app itself once it’s stopped (but not closed). Some may restart once you try to re-launch it. Some may continue.

Launching an app from the recent apps or from home screen or app drawer makes no difference.

Android is trying to keep as many apps as possible in the ram because unused ram is wasted. Android uses some algorithm to decide which apps should be kicked out (closed) to maintain ram for next job.

Quickoffice saves files to your Google drive. Did you really delete them? You need delete them from Google drive app. Quickoffice doesn’t delete files.

If it’s a local file saved on your phone, once it’s deleted, it should not be accessible.

You should use app backup tools, e.g., Helium, to backup and restore app data. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.backup&hl=en

Please do not play with individual files directly. After factory reset, when you install the app again, some keys may change and the data may be not usable. That’s the reason why you must use the backup/restore apps.

    Hello Simon,
Thanks for all the great tips, I’ve got the hang of my moto g far quicker!
I’ve been trying to find out how to display a little number over apps like messaging, email, whatsapp. phone, which shows the number of unread messages. It’s a great feature on my old iphone and Samsung android phones but it doesn’t seem to be on this phone – unless I’ve been too thick to find it. Can you point me in the right direction please?

The Google launcher doesn’t have this feature. Moto g uses a similar (near stock) launcher.

If you really need that feature, you have to use some third party launchers, e.g. Nova.

Hi Simon, Thanks for all the solutions it really helped me to learn about MOTO G.
Could you please let me know how to search Senders name in default messaging (SMS) app currently it is searching for sms contents 🙁
I was a iOS user, there we can search for sender of the message.

I really appreciate for all the help you are doing. hope my problem also will be solved. Fingers crossed 🙂

unfortunately, the messaging app does not have this feature. Yes, it only search contents. Some other Android phones (e.g.,) do have this feature. Moto G is using stock Android with very limited customization.

Moto G is targeting at new smartphone users. So Motorola has to minimize the settings to avoid confusion for a new user.

Moto G uses stock (almost) android. Most android vendors usually customize it heavily. For example, the search for senders is available in almost all Samsung android phones.

Stock android is for the two extremes of Android users: new smartphone users (it simply works of of box) and developers.

If you were iPhone user, you should try HTC or Samsung.

Anyway, you can check whether there are any apps for that.

    Hi, can anyone help?

I am used to Blackberry and have switched to Moto G, mainly for work. Still getting used to it but my big struggle at the moment is filing emails. I need to file my incoming emails into a file structure in Outlook (temporarily before they are archived). The problem is that there are over 200 folders. On the BB I could search for the folder by starting to type the project name or number and it would fine the folder. I don’t seem to have that option on the Moto G. I can’t scroll through hundreds of folders to find the right one every time I need to file and email!

    Thanks

Just normal USB to microUSB cable. It is better to get one from a PC store.

Most Samsung phones come with a USB cable, which usually has good quality and works with Moto G.

      1. you can uninstall apps installed by you. You can disable (turn off) some pre-installed apps. A few pre-installed apps cannot be disabled. You can do this in Settings–Apps. In Moto E, in app drawer (not home screen), tap and hold the app, you will have the option to uninstall it.

      2. It depends on the app used to receive the file.

      3. You can choose not to install. But you cannot disable OTA notifications.

You can access/manage your files with a file explorer, e.g., es file explorer. You may refer to this guide on how to install and use es file explorer: http://motoeguide.com/moto-e-guides/manage-files-moto-e-es-file-explorer-file-manager/

For video calls, Moto G doesn’t have a native so for it. You can try hangouts. Please note, this will use your 3g data.

Some carriers may provide free video calling. This doesn’t use your 3g data. But Moto G doesn’t support this.

There is no official way to share PC’s internet connection with your Moto G.

There is a tool called Android Reverse Tethering for windows, but it requires rooted phones. I NEVER test it. Here is the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1371345

The reboot can be caused by hardware problems, firmware issues, app problems. You can try to backup your data and do a factory reset.

If the problem persists after factory reset, (do not install apps from unknown sources for a while), you may have to visit the service centre to check the hardware.

If Moto G shows no update, it means the update is not available for your region yet. You need wait.

Some regions may get the update earlier than others.

Some regions skipped 4.4.3 and got (will get) 4.4.4 directly.

I assume you want to share your mobile data connection with your.

If your PC has a wireless adapter, you can turn on hotspot in your Moto E (Settings–More–Tethering & portable hotspot– portable hotspot. Then your PC can connect to the wifi network created by your Moto G. Hotspot drains battery very fast, so you should stop it when not in use.

If your PC does not gave a wireless adapter, you need connect your Moto E to your PC through USB cable (you need install USB driver in your PC: http://www.mymotocast.com/download/MDM?platform=windows ). In your Moto E, go to Settings–More–Tethering & portable hotspot–USB tethering. USB tethering is grayed out if usb connection is not detected.

I have spent a significant amount of time trying to set a custom notification sound and ringtone. I used to be able to record something and set it, simple as that on other phones, however with the Moto G its not that simple. originally i tried a voice recorder and used the app options to set as ringtone, but when I check settings it says “Ringtone- none”. So then I tried ringtone maker app, did the same thing, recorded something and tried to set it to no avail. I went a step further and got a file manager app to try and manually place the audio file into the media folder that contains all the default ringtones/notifications but it gives me an error saying its a read only file system… I even got a converter and tried .ogg (type for default notifications).. This is a real piss off, as I just want to simply set my sound to something personal that I enjoy… Can someone please help me here, is this possible??

Motorola camera app doesn’t have a timer.

You can always try some third-party camera apps, for example, camera 360. Of course, there apps are mainly for normal users, not professional photographers.

Motorola camera is for absolutely new users. So Motorola makes it extremely simple to use.

In us, there are two types of mobile networks: GSM and CDMA. Your Moto G probably can work on GSM network only. AT&T, T-Mobile are using GSM. Verizon is using CDMA. There are also many other carriers as well.

Normally, you don’t need change anything in your Moto G.

To edit read off file, you need install some PDF reader, for example, Quickoffice or Adobe PDF reader.

For word file, you can install Quickoffice and kingsoft office (wps?)

I’m not sure about what title bar you are talking about. QuickOffice does not have any functions of MS Word. KingSoft probably has more features, but it is also different from MS Word.

Both of them can open and edit your word file. But not all formatting can be read properly. Normally, people use them to edit the text, then formatting them in PC.

        • simon says

          June 27, 2014 at 1:35 pm

Normally you can set the limit as 2-4. You need experiment it. I seldom recommend user to try no background processes. I think this is to solve your other problems, not this one. This usually is for debugging purpose to find out whether the problem is caused by some background processes.

If you set no background process, some apps may not work properly.

When the phone is rebooted, this setting will go back to the default. This is normal.

Are you using mobile data or Wifi? The download speed depends on many factors, but most of them are beyond your control, e.g., the location of the nearest Google server; you ISP’s connection to Google server…

The restarting downloading is usually due to network issues.

You may also check the available space (settings–storage). If the available space is low, the phone will also become slow. Try to clear the cache for some apps to free up some space.

      You have two options.

Simple option: limit the background data. In Settings–Data usage, tap the menu key (3 vertical dots), check “Restrict background data”.

A bit more complicated option. Go to Settings– {}Developer options. Scroll all the way down, tap Background process limit. Choose at most 2 processes. You need test whether you should limit 1 or 2 or 3 or 4.

PS. if you cannot find developer options, please follow this guide to enable it: https://allaboutmotog.com/moto-g-how-to-guide/access-developer-options-menu-in-moto-g/ )

Yes, all developers options related settings will be reset after rebooting.

To solve battery problem, you need know who is draining battery. You need know whether the phone enters deep sleep state when not in use. You may install CPUSpy and GSam Battery Monitor apps. Monitor it for a few days to find the root cause first.

yes, I am getting message detail, not the delete option pop-up. it is happening 90% of the times, whenever i am trying to delete any sms. but some times i got that delete option pop-up.

Single tap gives message details. Tap and hold should give message options.

If you tap and hold the message, it still gives message details, you may check Settings–Accessibility–Touch & hold delay. Change it to Short.

Tap and hold “blank” area of the message, not the text area.

I think it’s important to tap and hold blank area. It always gives me the correct option if I tap the correct area.

tap the app drawer icon (6 dots in a circle, it is in the middle of the fav apps), tap widghets. You can scroll left and right to find the widget. Once you find it, tap and hold it to put in in the desired location.

The icon is there if you do this but it does not automatically come on when you power up. How do you get it to WORK again?

What do you mean it does not come on? The time is not correct?

Normally, it is better to save contacts in the phone and sync with Google account. SIM card can only save one number, while if you save it in the phone, you can save email, birthday ,,,,,,

If you want to use SIM card to save contacts, you may try this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.needom.simcontacts

Moto G does not have voice recorder for phone calls. You have to use some apps to do this job. Most of these apps require root.

Please note, in most regions, recording a phone call without consent of the other party may be illegal.

        Hi Simon,
Is there any available application to record incoming/outgoing calls without rooting the device (Moto Gen 2)?

As rooting of the Device will Void Warranty.

My Region is India and it doesn’t have any legal issues regarding recording of voice calls.

        Kindly advice.

I don’t think such apps work without rooting the phone. Android purposely disabled this feature already (as you know, for legal reasons).
