I have the 2014 LTE Moto-G with micro SD card slot.
In it there is a 32gb SD card, and Android (4.4) reports
Total Space = 29.71gb
Available Space = 29.21
So about 500mb used.
Wherever possible, I’ve moved apps to the card, but as you can see this has made only a marginal difference to the storage situation.
So here’s the problem:
The system doesn’t seem to give the apps access to the access card.
e.g. 1. My Backup Pro can only write to main memory, and when I try to move the backup files from the main memory to sd card Android (or Motorola?) stops the process with an error message.
e.g. 2
I can’t use the SD card to see downlaod files to, read them or update them.Is there a setting that I’m missing that will let me use the SD card as more than just a minimal media repository?

SD card access depends on apps. Actually Motorola does not impose restrictions on SD card access for apps (Samsung did impose). Essentially, any apps in Moto G can access SD card and create folders in root level.
