How to clear cache partition on Moto G and Moto X after Android Lollipop update?

Why you should clear the cache partition after updating to Android Lollipop?

Finally, most Moto G (including Moto G 2nd Gen) and Moto X (including Moto X 2nd Gen) owners received the Android Lollipop update.

After getting the Android Lollipop update, you may be excited with the many new features (see this post for top 5 new Lollipop features in Moto G and Moto X) and improved performance.

But for some Moto G and Moto X owners, the phone may behave weirdly. A few owners  may feel the phone is less responsive although Android Lollipop update should bring a faster Moto G or Moto X.

Some owners may face battery drain problems. Again, Android Lollipop should give you slightly longer battery life on Moto G (including Moto X 2nd Gen) and Moto X (including Moto X 2nd Gen).

So, what’s wrong with the Android Lollipop on these phones?

Someone may suggest you to do a factory data reset. But it is usually not necessary.

Very often, the weird behavior or poorer performance is caused by some leftovers in your cache partition.

Clearing cache partition can surprisingly solve most of such problems, without losing any personal settings.

Actually, you should clear the cache partition after any major Android update.

Will clearing cache partition remove my files or accounts or apps or settings?

Clearing cache partition does NOT affect any of your settings. It does NOT delete your files or accounts or apps.

In short, clearing cache partition is totally different from factory data reset, which will erase all your data, apps and settings.

Normally, factory reset is the last resort to solve software related issues. Before trying factory reset, experienced Android support engineer will try to clear the cache partition first. Most of the problems can then be solved without resetting the phone.

Step-by-step guide on how  to clear cache partition on Moto G and Moto X after Android Lollipop update

After the Android Lollipop update, the procedures of clearing cache partition on Moto G and Moto X are slightly changed. If you follow old guides, you may find you cannot get the wipe cache partition option in recovery mode. I will highlight this next.

Step 1:  Power off Moto G or Moto X

Press and hold power button for about 2-3 seconds.

You should get the Power off option on the screen as shown below.

Tap Power off to power off your Moto G or Moto X.

Please pay attention to the screen when pressing down the power button. If you press the button for about 10 seconds, the phone will reboot and you will therefore not get the power off option.

If the phone reboots, you should wait until it finishes the rebooting. Then, try to power off the phone again.

Step 2. Access boot options

Press and hold the volume down button for 4-5 seconds first.  Do not release your finger from the volume down button!

While still pressing and holding the volume down button, now press and hold the power button for 4-5 seconds (you are pressing and holding two buttons now).

Then release your fingers from both the power and volume  buttons.

You should get the boot options as shown below.

If nothing shows on the screen after releasing the volume down and power buttons, you have to repeat step 2 again.

Step 3: Boot into recovery mode

In boot options page (as shown above), you have to:

  • use volume down button to navigate;
  • use volume up button to select, NOT the power button as you may assume.

Do not use power button in boot options page. It will reboot the phone.

Now use volume down button to move the cursor to Recovery, then press volume up button to make the selection.

The phone should now boot into recovery mode.

After seeing Motorola splash page, you should get the dead Android as shown below.

++

Step 4: Access recovery mode menu

Once you get the dead Android, you must:

  1. press and hold power button for about 2-3 seconds.
  2. without releasing power button, press volume up button and release the volume up button.
  3. release the power button button.

You should get the recovery mode menu as shown below.

If the phone reboots, it means you hold the power button too long.

Note:  this step is different from that in KitKat or Jelly Bean.

If you Moto G or Moto X is still running KitKat or Jelly Bean, you should press and hold the volume up button for 10-15 seconds. Then, while still holding the volume up button,  tap and release the Power button to access recovery mode menu.

Step 5: Clear cache partition

In recovery mode menu, use volume down or volume up  button to navigate to “Wipe cache partition” as shown above.

Then use the Power button to select it. This is different from step 3.

After select the wipe cache partition, your phone will start to wipe all cache files in the cache partition. The status will be shown in the bottom of the screen as shown below.

This may take one or two minutes. Be patient. Some owners reported 10-15 mins for this process.

Step 6: Reboot the phone

You can select Reboot system now from the recovery mode menu, or press and hold the power button to reboot.

  • Hi, I have a Moto g (7) Power.
I tried these steps, but ...
At Step 3, FYI: The phone actually instructs me to use the Power Button to select, and it works. Otherwise, the Volume Up & Down just scroll through the menu.
However, at Step 4, I do not get the option to Wipe Cache Partition, I do get other options, including Factory Reset.

    :(

  • This has gone from bad to worse. Firstly I did Step 2 but failed to get step 3 right the first time - and appeared to lose Facebook, Messenger and Strava when the phone switched on. I have now been thru the whole process - the apps remaining are still as slow as they were since upgrading. Messenger and Strava were in my list of apps but not appearing on my screen - they work but slowly. I attempted to download and reinstall FB - refused to install, refused to remove - and then the phone just stopped and wouldn't switch on ...It then started again saying no room to install FB although it is actually there ... but everything is slow and some apps not opening - i only have about 6 extra on there and i've got a 32g sd card as internal memory - are these likely to be independent problems in a dodgy phone? Is it worth trying a complete reset of the phone and starting again? Or is it back to the shop NOW as it's only 2 months old? If i reset will i still have marshmallowor will it go back to what i had prior to upgrading - and what do i do with the sd card? sorry a lot of questions

    • Clearing cache partition should not affect any of your apps. Cache partition is a separate partition.

If you get low storage problems, very likely you should free up some space. When setting SD card as internal storage, you should try to migrate the data as explained in this guide http://gadgetguideonline.com/android/android-marshmallow-guide/how-to-use-micro-sd-card-as-internal-storage-in-android-marshmallow/

Factory reset will not change the Android version. It only remove all data and settings. If your phone is on Marshmallow, after the reset, it should still be on Marshmallow.

If the phone doesn't work as expected, you can return it if it's an option. Of course, it's due to low internal storage, you should free up some storage.

      • hi - this is not about cache but wonder if you can point me in the right direction for help - my sd card is not being recognised. it seemed to happen after the phone shut down of its own accord. i've been thru the processes recommended on other sites (there are a lot of reports of this post upgrading android) of turning off, removing card, rebooting, turning off, inserting card and rebooting - and still saying sd card not inserted and giving me the option to 'forget'the storage and lose everything - i can't see anything when i connect to my laptop with Explorer - not on the phone or the card whereas previously i've been able to move photos. i've tried the cache working just in case that worked but nothing -

        • Did your test the SD card in other devices? If the SD card is physically damaged, you have no choice but to get a new one.

          • I've tried to 'see' the card via Explorer and can't - but then neither can i see anything of the internal memory. and of course because the card has been formatted as internal memory i don' think there's anything else i can do except assume it's been cooked by either the phone or this crazy software update - there seem to be a lot of complaints! So i'll lose what I hadn't saved :( - i guess the question is whether to risk installing the new card as internal memory! thanks for your help
            helen

          • SD card is less reliable than internal storage. Adoptable storage is still new. Also getting a high-quality SD card is important.

Use SD card as internal storage only when you have no choice: you cannot free up enough internal storage. It address the internal storage issue. But it brings the reliability issue. So, you need to ask yourself whether you need more internal storage than the phone have.

For most users, if the phone has 32GB or more internal storage, it is usually enough. If the phone has less than 8GB storage, you may feel the pain on storage. For phones with 16GB storage, it highly depends on indvidual users. For normal users, it is usually enough. But if you play a few large games, you may find it is not enough.

Please note, if you use SD card as internal storage, you can only use the SD card on the phone. You cannot use the SD card in other phones or PCs (using SD card reader) unless you format it.

When you connect the phone to the PC, your PC should recognize it if USB driver is installed (please follow this guide). You need check the phone notification and switch to MTP (the default is charging only) as explained in this guide. If the SD card is used as internal storage, you actually should only see SD card in the PC. But for your case, I guess the SD card or the file system was corrupted.

      • It got worse and turned itself off ... then on without any contact. Then this morning FB appeared (after a few failed installations) and things have speeded up! So not sure why the problems after the Cache partition clear but it seems now to be OK so thanks! I'll keep the page bookmarked in case it goes again

        • Thank you for the update. If there are many problems, you can try to back up the phone and reset it. It's also important to keep about 1GB free storage in the real internal storage.

Using SD card as internal storage may slow down the phone. But it should not be so significant for a quality SD card.

  • The process described here was too lengthy. Don't U have any simple way to clear cache.. As in ginger bread there was an option in app setting to clear cache of every heavy and frequently used apps. Isn't there any such way in marshmallow? Well the process needs much time to do so.. And as we know we cannot do all these process regularly.

    • You are talking totally different things. Cache partition is a special partition holding cached settings and some data. You have to enter recovery mode to clear it.

For app cache and data, they are saved in your phone storage. You can clear them in application manager. In Marshmallow, it's one step deeper. In settings - apps- choose the app - storage. You can then find the clear cache and clear data buttons as in previous generations of Android.

  • Has anyone else had to do this several times? This post is awesome! It is frustrating when you have to do it every couple months. Is it reall worth the update. Such a hassle

    • Update.... This time the process did not work, neither did a factory reset. Is my phone just done? Still getting opti, using apps on start and spent over an hour trying to remove this. Battery drain you know the usual

      • You will go through apps optimizing every time when you reboot the phone. If the process takes long time, it usually means you have many old apps. You should update them.

If you really want ton test the phone, you can backup the phone. After factory data reset, don't restore apps.

It seems the problem is caused by some of apps you installed.

  • Really good tip clearing cache partion as it not only cured my bluetooth headset issues which were that i couldnt use it for phone calls but everything else was ok but it also cured my track jumping mp3 issues that i had on lollipop and on marshmallow after the update and the sound quality is a lot better also.....Awesome,thanks guy's thats definitely a super tip.

  • Thank you

I've had a rash of problems on my 1st gen Moto X after the Android 5.1 upgrade.

Those problems include strange noises, including pops and such.
    System running slower.
    Battery drain is much higher.
Wifi being very troublesome and not sending/receiving data like it used to do.
I've tried other solutions including working with Motorola support. Nothing worked.

I followed your instructions for wiping the cache partition and that process is perfectly spelled out. It's so clear that it overcame my fear of trying it. I followed it with zero problems!

I will have to time test all the apps and problems. But for the immediate moment, it rebooted and everything seems fine. Thank you for your extremely clear instruction on how to clear the cache partition. I will check in later on improvements, results, any issues that I find.

It took at least 15 minutes to re-partition "formatting cache", so thanks for that note that it might take a while.

    Thank you again!

      • Thank you for the instructions and especially for making them idiot proof! (I'm a technophobe and I managed to follow them first time!).

On my 3rd gen Moto G with Marshmallow, in step 3, I needed to use the power button to select the option (rather than the volume up button) but otherwise, all went to plan first time!

Thanks again. You provided a brilliant resource. Much appreciated!

        • Yes...me too (had to use the Power button instead of VolumeUp). Perhaps Simon can add this info in a parenthesis right in the main text, so that readers will not get stuck or make to read all the commentaries to solve their dilemma. Otherwise, great article!

  • Hello.. I am using moto x (1st gen) and I updated to 5.1 Android version .. Only after that I am not able to scan any wifi networks nearby..and I have checked whether it is the problem of wifi router.. It works perfectly in other mobiles.. And I get an error mark (!)near wifi symbol even when it is on..could you tell what ll be the problem with this wifi scanning..?

    • You should go to settings - WiFi. Turn it off, then turn it on to see whether it actually scans or not.

  • The steps were performed on Moto G secong gen running on lollipop. But the problem still exists. "restart camera" while accessing front cam.

Is there anything further that can be done ??

  • I updated my moto g 2nd gen to the android 6.0 And Since about 2 days I saw my phone’s was out of internal storage and yesterday while i was using what's app suddenly my phone's got hanged I saw my phone showing a message that many apps are got unfortunately stopped and after that i switch off my phone directly and then switching on my mobile the problems remains the same.it didn’t work properly. But after making some internal space in my phone all apps were working properly but the problem is that i can't slide down the notification bar and no notification is appearing in that and also my security lock/pin is not working as it shows the message that because you've turned on an accessibility service.your device won'tuse your screen lock to enhance data encryption. please help me out to solve this problem. and also my home button is not working. if you know how to help me I would appreciate your help.

  • btw - this step-by-step still works on marshmallow, except after selecting "wipe cache" you will get a yes/no confirmation screen. select option with vol keys and confirm with power buttons

    • After my moto G upgrade last month my phone will not let me go to links in emails! Also I have no sound on YouTube and sometimes Facebook YouTube videos won't play at all! I successfully wiped my cache partition but the problems are still there! Any advice?

  • How do i delete audio that is taking up my internal memory.I have moto e first generation phone. I have tried everyway i can and still not able to do it. Want let me click and hold on it and delete the music i have in there that is taking up all my internal memory or even let me listen to them. Someone please help me. My email is REMOVED.Hope to hear from someone soon. I hate to do a factory data reset if possible not to have to do.Thanks.

      • After update to Android 6 ..my phone slowed down, hangs up frequently, when switched on takes long time for on 10-15 min, it shows "Android starting " optimising app 1 of 1... What should I do ?..Moto G3

        • If clearing cache partition doesn't solve the issue, you can backup Moto G, then try a factory reset.

Optimizing apps when rebooting are normally for apps that are not target for Marshmallow ( the developer decides the "targeted" Android version).

  • Hi, I am having Moto X (1st Gen) running on Lollypop upgrade. It worked fine for few months and now touch doesn't respond to the top-left corner menu (eg. menu of Playstore) of any application. if I rotate the screen, still the menu doesn't work. I am sure it is related to the software and not the hardware (screen).

If I reboot the device, it starts working and after sometime, it stops again.

Do you think wiping the cache partition will help?

  • Sir i tried ur wipe cache solution in order to recover shutter sound option. But this option doesn't work as well. What should i do?

  • sir i am having more trouble i have moto x 1st gen there is a problem like after updating the phone to android4.4.4.2 no sim card is showing it is saying no sim card . so i tried to uupdate to lolipop after updating to lolipop 5.1 it is showing the same i removed my sim card and switched off and again i inserted my sim card correctly still it is not get corrected help me pls..

    • You probably have to visit Motorola service center to check the SIM card slot. Also make sure the card is working in other phones.

  • My Moto X1058 (2013) no longer vibrates after the Lollipop update. All of my vibrate options are enabled. I have also done a factory reset and still no vibration on calls, messages, key touch or any notifications. It worked before the update. Any suggestions to a fix?

    • Power off the phone, then re-insert the SIM card. WiFi can always be enabled/disabled at anytime.

Clearing cache partition should not affect your SIM card or wifi.

      • Hi Simon,

I just checked IP Address, Wi-Fi Mac address, IMEI Details from About Phone>Status

Everything is blank. Can you please help?

        • Not sure. But I'm sure clearing cache partition should not bring you back to kitkat.
If I were you, I will backup the phone and try a factory reset.

      • Hello Simon,

Phone is not reading any Sim card, they are working on another phone.
I tried re-inserting sims few times.

Also, When I try to turn on WiFi, I get only message "turning WiFi On..." & it is not turning on even after few minutes.

Also, The animation when I turn on the phone is now old from Kitkat version.

        Please help me.

        Thanks in advance.

  • Dear all,
Me had updated my Moto g2 to 5.0.2 ie. Lollipop version ... initially it works ok ok gaining all the benefits having Lollipop, but after some couple of days .. me .. all of sudden not able to access my Memory card (16 gb) and device is not able to detect both SIMs ... even in Settings->Sim Cards bot the SIM indicators are remain Disabled .. not able to make them Enabled back.
What may be the problem occur with my device after updating to 5.0.2.
Even after "clear the cash partition" me is not able to detect Memory Card or SIMs.

Plz help me out to resolve the problem.

    • Did you try to reinsert the sim card? You should also try one by one. You should power off the phone when inserting/changing cards.

  • I have my Motorola G2 constantly Rebooting and does not pass over Motorola Log .It just went to rebooting sequence all of a sudden.Kindly help.
Is there any workaround to get my data back from Internal storage.

    Please help
    Regards
    Mohithkumar.G

    • Not sure. Normally you can get the data after it reboots normally.

You may have to visit local Motorola service center indicated in the warranty card to check the phone.

  • The instructions above did not advance me to the Recovery / dead android screens on my Moto X 1st gen (2013) even after multiple attempts.

Motorola's instructions for wiping the cache were successful on the first try. There multiple differences, but the most important seemed to be having the phone unplugged during the process. That changed the behavior completely.

    https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/prod_answer_detail/a_id/94946/p/30,6720,8696

Results were that bluetooth connections were restored/stabilized, the phone stopped trying to optimized applications on reboot, and NFC unlock (aka Moto skip) functionality restored.

  • Thanks for the tips - am hoping it works for my Moto X - Gen 1. After installing Lollipop 5.1, I get an error message that Google Services isn't updated, which it is, and every time start the phone, it optimizes every one of 117 apps. So, am trying your suggestion. Currently it is showing qe 0/0 -- wiping cache .. Formatting/ cache... Has been in that mode for 10 minutes.

If it stays that way, what should I do? If the answer is reboot, how do I do that? Thank you.

    • Just wait a bit longer. It can take up to 20 mins although it takes less than a few minutes for most owners.

After wiping cache is done, it should return back to boot options and you can choose reboot the phone. If you are not patient, you can hold power button to restart the phone.

You must update Google play services after updating to a new version of android.

      • Thank you Simon. About five minutes after pushing send, it finished wiping the cache. Took care of the optimizing apps issue, however, there is an horrific lag on accessing most anything now since I updated to Android/Lollipop 5.1. Any suggestions there? It makes the phone virtually unusable.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

        • It could be due to some other apps. If this is the case, you can try to reboot the phone. Please note, you do NOT need any antivirus, task manager or battery saver apps. These apps usually drag down the performance of the phone,

Of course, if it is still too slow after normal usage of 1 to 2 days, you can back up the phone, and try a factory data reset (although nobody likes to do it..).

          • Hello again,
It's actually all apps. I cannot uninstall anything, update any apps, nor install new apps. During any of those processes, it's gets hung up at a certain point, incomplete, and just stops. Ex: Uninstalling a simple rental car app - has been attempting for 30 minutes. Updating a simple audio app -- consistently gets to 96% and stops. Updating Google Play Services, gets to 35% and stops. This all happened immediately subsequent to the Lollipop (5.1) update. Next step is to do a factory reset, and I've ensured that backup has been "checked", however, I can't find anything that tells me where it "goes". The places I find, like Google dashboard, don't have everything that's on my phone -- i.e.; not all pics, not screenshots.....Anyway, a very frustrating process. Really don't want to lose data, pics, etc. Argh.
            Thanks again for your help.

          • There are no known problems with 5.1 update for Moto devices. The problem is very likely caused by some apps.

The backup you saw is only for some settings (e.g., wifi password, Bluetooth devcies...). They are backed up to your Google account. When you setup the phone after factory data reset, it will ask you whether you want to restore these settings. These do NOT include any of your files.

Gmail, google drive, Play music and Google books are always available in the cloud with your Google account. Contacts are also synced to Google server unless you disable the sync for it.

For photos, you can enable the auto backup to Google Photos. You need open the Photos app and enable it. You can verify the backup in https://photos.google.com

For call logs and test messages, you can use SMS Backup & Restore app and Call Logs Backup & Restore app.

For app data, you have to back up manually. Some apps have a backup feature (e.g., WhatsApp) and you need move the backup to your PC or Google drive or SD card. Most app don't have this feature. You have to check to see whether you nee backup such data.

If you need backup some app data (e.g., game progress), you may try Helium - App Sync and Backup. But some apps/games do not work well with it. You should NOT use this app to backup WhatsApp chats and media.

  • Hi Simon. Thanks for the clear directions. I followed these steps on my Moto XT1060 because each time my phone restarts it wants to optimize each of my apps. Unfortunately clearing the cache partition didn't resolve that issue. Any ideas on a fix?

    • It should only optimize some old apps that were not updated for long time. If the app is built with older sdk, android will try to optimize it when you reboot the phone.

You really cannot do much. Just clean apps that are not used for long time. Also update all apps if available.

      • Thanx Simon. You are a saviour. World is a better place with people like you. I cleared my cache partition as per your instructions and it worked like a dream. thanx again

  • I am using Moto X generation 1. After the lollipop upgrade, it gets switched off abruptly. Could you please elp for the same. Rate of getting switched off is about 5-6 times/day.

  • First of all thanks Simon :)

my phone had a problem that unable to restart and just showing white screen so i tried to follow above

while doing the above steps, when i select 'recovery' then it is giving me the result " boot failed "

  • wow simon u r the man.. i almost fed up with this lollypop but u saved my time and money too... thanks man.. much appreciated.. writing this after only 2 min of use.. worked so faster.. thanks man..

  • Will this clearing method do anything for the Moto X 2013 Lollipop upgrade problem of Youtube videos freezing ("There was a problem playing, Click to retry") No problems on Kitkat.

  • Will this clearing method do anything for the Moto X 2013 lollipop problem of now not being able to do Google Now voice searches from any screen hands free? Worked great on Kitkat.

  • Lollipop Steps

    KitKat Steps

With the phone powered off, press the VOL DOWN KEY for 2-3 seconds then POWER key then release.

The device will display different BOOT OPTIONS
Use the VOL DOWN Key to SCROLL to Recovery and VOL UP Key to select

The device will reboot and start the normal power up sequence

  • After lolly pop upgrde 5.1, My Moto X phone , I am not able to Delete Individual SMS messages . I Cleared the System Cache post Upgarde . Can anyone Help me ?

  • In Kitkat 4.4.4, in step 5 to wipe the cache, my phone tells me it's wiping, and immediately reboots (within 1 second after it told me it's wiping). I get the feeling it never gets the chance to complete the wiping process.

Maybe there's not so much data in my cache, since my only update was from Jellybean 4.4.2 to Kitkat 4.4.4. However, I never receive a message that wiping and formatting of the cache has been completed, and I'm not sent back to reboot myself.

Am I correct in concluding my cache hasn't been wiped? I don't notice any changes to my phone's behaviour whatsoever. Cheers!

    • It's not necessary to wipe cacahe partition of the phone doesn't have problems.

After finishing clearing cache partition, normally it should stay on the recovery menu until you choose to reboot the phone or press the power button.

Can you navigate to and select wipe cache partition option?

  • thank you very much for this tip. I tried it on my Moto G 1st gen (XT1032) and after 36 hours I can say that it worked marvels, without any apparent side effects. now it's almost (almost) as snappy as brand new. you have saved it from being stamped against the wall. kudos.

  • I did see a slight improvement on my XT1039 after wiping the cache partition, but I am still plagued by lack of space. I have moved all applications I can to the SD card, but since they keep going back to internal memory when they are updated, I have quite a hassle of keeping the available memory high enough that upgrades actually work and do not fail due to insufficient available memory.

How much "Total space" should be showing in Storage? I have 5.52 GB, which does seem rather low. As I then have about 3.7 GB of apps, I am perilously close to the limit (app ugrades seem to fail when there is less than about 900 MB available).

Thinking of doing a factory reset, but before I do, how much "Total space" do other people have after the Lollipop upgrade?

    • The total space is normal. For the 8gb model, system will take around 2-3GB p space. So, there are only about 5-6GB available for you.

When updating apps, the apk files must be downloaded and unzipped in the internal storage. This requires storage of about twice of the apk file size.

This is how android works. There are no workarounds to use SD card for the app update. You should try to uninstall apps that are not used for long time. You can also move all media files to SD card.

Lollipop update takes similar space. You should also get about 5.5GB usable storage for the 8gb model.

  • I just got a moto x 2nd gen. I am having trouble downloading lollipop 5.1. What happens is the initial download goes fine but when it asks me to restart it fails on the android image(dead android) after about a min. Is this a cache problem? Thanks

    • If the phone asks you to restart after downloading updates, it means the download is successful. You can reboot the phone normally. If you still get the dead android, you have to visit service center.

  • I followed the directions and was able to successfully wipe cache partition. Phone is noticeably faster. But there are several problems in my phone since then.
1.Notifications for Alarms (they don't ring), Reminders, Calender Events, Google Keep, etc.
2.Messages are not getting sent (Normal SMS)
    3. When connected to PC, phone does not get detected (It used to before, checked it on 2 computers)
4.Trouble installing apps from the Playstore (Gets stuck and takes ages for 'installing')
5.Frequent disconnection of the Cellular Network and Mobile Internet

Would appreciate some insight into solving these issues.
    Thanks a lot.

    • You need sort the problem one by one.
1.for notification, what are your settings? Are you in none mode?
      2. what's the error message? Try to reboot the phone.
      3. Uninstall the Motorola device manager and re-install it.
      4. Clear cache and clear data for play store app.
      5. Not sure. Make sure SIM is inserted tightly.

  • Hi I'd like to clear my cache partition on my Moto G 2nd gen (dual sim and sd card). I did it on my old moto g no probs. But on this phone I can't do step 2! I'm following the instruction exactly but either nothing happens (ie I must be releasing the buttons too soon) or it reboots so I should have released sooner. Is it anything to do with the fact that I have a SD card inserted. Although I have dual SIM I only have 1 inserted. Or does it not work on this phone?
My phone is so slow that I desperately need to do this!
    Many thanks

    • It should not be related to SD card or SIM card.

Just follow the steps exactly. You may read some tips from a few other members in the comments.

      • Hi Simon, as I said I did it before on my old moto G so I know the knack. But for some reason it's just not happening on my new phone :-(

        • Yes it's working - but only for a certain amount of time. I hold it for around 4 secs and can see the volume bar at the top of the screen. Then keeping it pressed down I press power and can still see the volume bar but then it disappears after around 3s despite keeping my finger on it. Very frustrating.

          • You probably did not hold the volume down button tight enough. Is the volume down button working properly on the phone?

        • Not sure. But if you press and hold volume down and power buttons without releasing them, what will you get?

  • Hi Simon,

Thanks for the steps. I bought my Moto G second Gen last month and after 2 weeks i found the hanging problem. If i open 3-4 apps my phone start hanging. At that time i've around 10 apps installed in my phone and these are standard apps like social networking & online shopping apps.

I deleted most of the apps and still found that issue occurring 2-3 times a day. So i followed the above steps to delete the cache. After that the phone worked fine for 2 days but again i found the same problem. Could you please let me know how to resolve that problem or any best practice to use moto G. I think it's because of the 1GB RAM which is bery low for such a big phone.

    Regards
    Vivek

    • It could also be caused by low internal storage. Did you check the available internal storage in settings - storage?

Also if you installed any antivirus or task manager or battery saver apps, try to remove them.

1GB ram should be good enough for most apps because there is almost no bloatware.

      • Hi Simon,

I've 6.93GB of free space and I don't have any AV, task manager & battery saver apps. I've only installed
        FB,
        Skype,
        whatsapp,
        clean master
few online shopping & Cab booking apps

        • Clean master can be a problem maker.

Skype is also a resource hogger. You can try to close it by back button (not home button).

You can try to install Greenify and add some apps to the list. This is better than any task manager.

  • Hi, I followed the steps and everything worked perfectly fine. Phone seems a bit faster too. Though having 2 issues since then.
    1. Some problem with the notification settings . My alarms don't ring anymore. Only when I open the clock then I get the missed alarm notifications.
    2. It shows that I am always online on whatsapp to others. I have to go to the recent apps button and slide off whatsapp to work around this.

I am not sure if any of this is related with clearing the cache partition. But they started after doing that.
    Will appreciate your help.
    Thanks!

    Very well written post !

    • Unlikely clearing cache partition would cause these.

For alarm, probably you are in none mode. When in none mode, all notifications are blocked including alarm.

For WhatsApp, you probably exit the app through home button. You may use back button. Also in WhatsApp settings - account - privacy you can tweak the settings.

      • I checked, I am not in the None mode. It's set to 'All'.

And for Whatsapp, I generally exit via the back button.

  • My Moto G 1st gen has become noticeably faster after wiping the cache partition as suggested by this post.
I had been struggling with the sluggish response after the lollipop update. Now it seems to be faster and hope it continues to perform so. Thanks for the tip and the detailed post.

  • Simon, thank you for your article. The solution you presented appears to have fixed many problems with this new and "improved" Android version. I updated my system about a month ago, and since then, my phone has had significant difficulty sending and receiving pictures via text message. Using apps like Twitter and Facebook present no problems, but trying to send and receive them via text is nearly impossible.

I am at the point of doing a factory reset due to lack of other ideas or tricks to try. Do you, or any one else on the board, have any suggestions?

    Thanks!

    • Sending pictures through messages app depending on the MMS service provided by your carrier. Twitter or Facebook use internet connection. They are fundamentally different from MMS.

You need set correct APN and enable mobile data to use mms. Normally, APN settings are automatically configured by your carrier. You just make sure mobile data is enabled. You can check with your phone company on MMS issues.

Do you get any errors when sending mms?

  • I updated my Moto x (1st gen) to lollipop almost 2 weeks ago to date.
Everything was running smoothly until a few apps just had more glitches than usual, (not responding and the phone asking me to close them) other than that everything was fine.
I opened Shazam (today), as usual, the app stayed on a white screen, unusual. Other apps stopped responding. So I decided to do a reboot. The reboot process went by normally but then the screen just goes to a black screen, won't wake up or respond. I can hold down the power button and the option to shut down comes up. I can reboot over and over but the same thing happens. It's not recognized as a device when plugged into the computer. Occasionally the active display will come up with the time and any notifications but I can't access them. I can call the phone and it will ring, but as you've realized by now, I can't answer it nor will the screen wake up for me to see the call.
To fix this I tried wipe cache partition first and then rebooting in safe mode, none worked. I'm not sure what else to do. Does anyone have this problem? PLEASE ASSIST.

Any help would be very much appreciated!

    • if phone does not work in safe mode, you probably have to reset the phone or visit the service center.

      • Same thing happened to my Motorola Moto X (1st gen), black screen after boot up animation but strangely power off dialogue box and phone alarms worked. Motorola tech suggested clearing cache partition, this didn't fix the problem. Next step was a factory reset but luckily I had Google synced, so saved all of my contacts/calendar/apps. Music & pics lost, but I back these up regularly.
The only problem now is that Wifi is so erratic. Sometimes phone keeps looking for Wifi and never finds it. Other times Wifi is found but I cannot connect. Finally on the odd ocassion I connect to Wifi, it drops out for no reason.

        Any thoughts, help greatly appreciated?

  • If i wipe the cache partition ,will the settings of the apps ,username and password ,will it be resetted?. If no what will be cleared and what will be the behavioral changes in the phone

    • No, clearing cache partition does not change these. But do not touch other items in the recovery menu.

When you open an app, normally the "cached" version is used to speed up the app. The cached copies are created during initial installation or updating if the partition has enough space.

Clearing cache partition will force the phone to rebuild the cache.

Please note, this is different "clear cache" in application manager. In application manager, you only clear the cached "data", not the cached app itself.

      • Thanks Simon,

Now the main problem of my Moto G2 is that the battery is getting drained out quickly.not standing even 12 hrs if most of the time the internet usage is through Wifi. I have done the upgrade to Lolipop before 3-4 months. So if i do clear the cache partition, will it be useful??

  • Thanks, this helped me clear my cached data, the steps are clearly written, minus the 2nd step, where I got stuck. We done have to press the volume down button and the power button at first. We have to first Power off the device, then press the volume down button and the Power button simultaneously to get the recovery mode on. Thanks a lot, I hope my wifi issues and the network issues get sorted after clearing the cached data. This was helpful, Thank you.

      • It varies from less than 1min to 20+ mins. Anyway, it should take less than 30mins to clear cache partition.

If it takes longer than 45mins, you can try to reboot the phone.

        • Bom dia. Após fazer todos os passos em meu moto G, não sai da tela
          qe 0/1
          -- Wiping data...
          Formatting /data...

  • Step 4: Access recovery mode menu

Once you get the dead Android, you must:

press and hold power button for about 2-3 seconds.
without releasing power button, press volume up button and release the volume up button.
    release the power button button.

You should get the recovery mode menu as shown below.

If the phone reboots, it means you hold the power button too long.

this step is not working m tried it several times phone restarting automatically pls guide in this regard

  • Attempted to clear cache but got as far as selecting the recovery button, then the phone turn black. Never got the dead android screen so nothing else to do but restart phone. So, when I did I get the optimizing screen with 83 apps to optimize. Takes about 7-10 to finish that and then I start again with step 1. This has happened 3 times already. Any suggestions, please.

    • Which recovery button?

App optimisation usually means the apps are not targeted for lollipop, if they have to go through the process after every reboot?

  • thanks, this works well for me and my Moto G 1st Gen :-)

Battery life doubled to almost 2 days and far more responsive when starting and using apps. However it doesnt last long, as soon as apps are updated the phone seems to gradually slow down.

When battery life is down to less than 24hrs I clear the cache again to return the phone to its best performance (about every 4 weeks).

  • Thank You!
After clearing the cache phone running smooth but after 2-3 days same problem will come. Please help.

    • It could be caused by some inactive apps. You can try to use Greenify to force the apps to sleep state.

  • Hi. Can this be done via ADB? I've successfully downloaded adb, and have my phone connected to it (e.g. can boot into basic recovery, but don't know how to pass on commands from there)

    • ADB works only when the phone is booted into Android. You can operate the phone when it is in the boot menu.

You can reboot the phone into recovery mode with ADB command: adb reboot recovery

  • Your article is amazing!!! You just saved me from spending unnecessarily buying another phone. Please keep it up!!!

  • Just did this on a 2nd gen Moto G that was sluggish. and I can say that for 100% it improves your performance, I'd guess I got a 50% boost or so. My ass was SLUGGGGGGGISH and now it's pretty snappy....loading playlists in Spotify then kicking out...doing lots of "desktop" swaps in and out of Apps...seems WAY better. And anyways, its' for sure not worse, so I say do it!

  • Hi Simon,
I recently received Moto X first Gen Lollipop 5.1 update for India.
Post which im unable to connect to my home network. My network is not even listed under available n/w's, but i can find my neighbors network.

I did clear cache partition also tried safe mode, not getting connected, even if it connects there is an exclamation and im unable to browse.

I verified my network connection in my laptop and tablet the network strength is good.

    Can you please help me?

    Regards,
    Dheepthi

    • Not sure. But if you updated the phone from Kitkat to 5.1 directly (not through 5.0), you should backup the phone and try a factory data reset.

      • Hi Simon
I have updated my motox first generation from KitKat to 5.1 recently. I have noticed batery drain problem. I have also cleared cache partition. Battery drain when phone in on my 3g..however on WiFi battery drain does not noticed..
        Please advise

  • My moto G data is not working after updating to android 5.0.2 . Can someone please help

  • Did partition following your instruction experienced very good battery life but now m facing a problem
m using moto g1 (5.0.2) my battery getting discharged from 100% to 15% within 4-5hrs even if i have not used it how to get rid of this ?
before it use to take around 2 days if m not using it but now its pathetic :(
    help me plz

    • Reboot the phone to see whether it helps.

When you have battery issues, you should check the breakdown of the battery usage in settings - battery. It will give you better idea how the battery is drained.

  • Moto X first generation. On step 4 for the clearing catch partition. Like many could not get past dead Android. Try holding down power button and tapping vol up buttom. It works. But still lollipop sucks. Battery drain, connectivity issues, problems with voice search, problems with voice command on calendar .

    • Try to do a factory reset. It solves most problems. Please backup your files and data before resetting.

      • Hi Simon

I did as you suggested and it it solved the lag problem for a while. But I still have issues with the phone dialer.. its too sluggish and at times I am not able to swipe and take calls for 3-5 secs... I want to go back to Kit Kat. Can u suggest whats the best way to go back to the latest version of Kit Kat and also whats the best solution to back up my phone so that all the data can be easily restored.

        • There is no official way to rollback in Android. You need find the official ROM fore your region and flash it. If you flash the wrong firmware (not for your region), your phone may become unusable.

If you phone is still under warranty, you can ask the service center to flash Kitkat for you.

For the lag, you may consider to backup the phone, then do a factory reset, then format internal storage before setting it up again. There are no known problems with dialer in Android 5.0 or 5.1 for Moto devices.

    • I am facing the same issues on my mobile. I am not able to update my apps, Its getting stuck in between 57-70%. I have deleted almost everything but my phones shows only 1gb is free. I guess i am using only 2gb of space with songs and with other apps like What's app and all but still showing me the same problem, Before the update my phone has around 2.5-3gb of free space.

Phone is freezing and getting hanged every now then. I am not getting instant updates on email and sms. I am feeling handicapped because i am not getting my OTP instantly. I am not getting instant updates on gmail.

I am really disappointed and annoyed of myself. I wish i have ignored this update because earlier my phone was working like a gem.

The phone am using is MOTO X first gen.

      • The lollipop for moto x update takes about 1GB more space.

If there are so many problems and wiping cache partition does not help, you may backup your phone and do a factory data reset.

Actually, there are not so many problems with Lollipop update for Moto X, as I know.

      • I am not able to charge my phone via USB cable through pc or laptop. My pc is not detecting my phone.. I guess this is the disaster update till date.

        • If Moto X is not being charged, the cable may have some issues.

There is no change in Motorola USB driver. So, if the PC can recognize the phone in KitKat, it should still recognize it in Lollipop. You can try to uninstall the Motorola device manager, then install it again.

  • Thank you very much simon, many problems are solved after clearing cache :). It took around 13 minutes for me.

  • Hi Simon,

Thank you so much for your help. I was struggling from the moment I upgraded to Lollipop 5.0.2 on my Moto G2. My phone used to switch off automatically. The other issue was that my memory card was not getting detected. After the cleaned my cache partition i got my data. Feeling really great.

Please do also tell me whether performing frequent cache wipes affects the phone?

    Thanks once again

    • Thank you for your feedback.

Clearing cache partition should not affect the phone. But normally you need it only after firmware update.

      • Hi Simon,

A recent update is that my SD card gets detected and un-detected most of the times. In fact it got detected, stayed in the same state for few hours and after a while when I checked back, it was not getting detected.

I performed cache partition wipe multiple times, but none of this is helping me.

        Kindly need your inputs.

        Thanks

        • I am also having a problem with the SD card being unexpectedly removed. Have tried clearing cache and reinserting the card, but it keeps happening as soon as I boot up.

  • Dear boss
Yesterday I update my 2nd Moto g 1 gen .phone 8gb and its got issues .1 turned switched off . I did clear cache problem remain same .then I did factory data reset problem solve .
But next day when I declined my display briteness problem accur the same.
So again I did factory data reset and to check I did briteness at low level so same problem accured my phone got switched off and when I press power button it got start anly for 20 seconds .I fell help less doesn't know but to do.please help.

    • What's the problem? Would you please elaborate?

Of course, if the problem can be easily re-produced, you can visit local Motorola service center to check the phone.

  • Very helpful post. Thank you.

After the Android 5.1 update, my Moto X (1st generation) was going through a ten minute "optimizing app of " routine during each restart. Your instructions for wiping the cache partition apparently cured the problem.

Kind of surprised that wiping the cache is not part of the system update automation.

    • When on dead android logo
1.Press and hold the power button till 2secs
2.after 2secs press and hold vol up till the screen goes black
As soon as the screen goes black release the vol up button and then release the power button

      • Thanks for this addition to the instructions! I was stuck on the dead android logo and even the Moto X site didn't specify these clicks in this detailed order. Your clarification got me past the dead android logo and cache is being cleared now.

  • clear cache didn't do the job for me. Didn't make it any faster.
BUT did a factory reset friday.....and have a brand new FAST again moto g 1stgen! love it
Thx for the support on here.
    grts

  • Hello Simon
After few days of installing Lollipop update on my phone, Bluetooth stopped working. Other devices show that some OBEX profile is activated only. Can you help me to solve this problem? I want to send and receive files from Bluetooth.

  • Worked as charm
I was experiencing many problems - Play Store would not download or update apps, apps would not open, alarms did not ring.
    Everything is working fine now.
    Thanks Simon

  • Awesome post. The Lollipop update seemed like a nightmare... even the keypad was behaving like its in a sleep walk mode. It took about 10 mins to wipe cache... Phone is much faster now if not better than Kit Kat

  • i have updated to lolipop few days back my phone suddenly got switched off now its not starting after moto logo i have tries cleariing the cache what should i do now pls help

    • If the phone cannot start, you may have to visit local Motorola service centre. Of course, you may try to reset the phone took see whether it helps. Please note, you will lose all data and settings if you reset the phone.

  • Hi Simon,

My Moto G first gen keeps on giving the reminder to update to the Lollipop which i dont want to do since there are many performance issues reported with the update.

Is there any way with which i can stop the auto reminder? Its really annoying since it keeps on coming sometimes even during playing videos.

    Please help

    • There should be an option to set a reminder thus allowing you to choose when the phone asks you to update, therefore can you not just choose the furthest possible reminder and keep repeating those steps?

To be honest I didn't want to update to Lollipop but I did and I've followed the above 6 Steps to which it has vastly improved the performance of the phone. There are some changes on the Lollpop O/S that seem annoying and pointless but it could just be because I'm so used to KitKat.

BTW thanks for this post Simon it has helped a lot :)

  • Thanks. The Step 4 helped a lot. I was unable to go beyond the "Dead Android". In my case, the clear app cache took about 10 minutes.

  • mic is not working in my moto g. the caller at the other end is not able to hear my voice. but it is working fine on speakerphone. should i clear cache or it is a hardware issue?

    • You can download a voice recorder to test whether the mic work or not. Or you can test any app that allows you to use mic.

Clear cache may only solve a few software related issues, not hardware related ones. Anyway, you can try it.

      • This problem started for me too after the update. (Only speaker phone works now)

Also some times if I need to enter numbers in a phone call the screen will flash on and off making it extremely difficult to get through machine oporated lines like government switch boards

        • You can try to clear cache partition for sound issue.

For screen on/off issue when in a call, it's due to proximity sensor. You probably covered proximity sensor.

  • I just wanted to say thanks for the very helpful advice and suggestions in this article. I was having significant lag problems with my 1st generation Moto G when I recently updated it from Kit Kat to Lollipop. Programs were running very slowly, and the OS itself seemed to take forever to do basic tasks such as launching applications or switching between apps. I followed the directions for wiping the cache partition. It took about 11 minutes to complete. After I rebooted my phone, it was running much more quickly, and I was able to launch apps almost as fast as before (if not faster in a few cases). Thanks so much for sharing this tip!

  • Any others reporting poor phone signal on the second sim slot after update to 5.0.2.
Before update no issues now very bad signal

    • Did you compare signal in the same location at almost same time for slot 1 and slot 2? There should be no difference.

  • Is it okay to do the wipe cache preocess while the power cable still connected to the phone?

  • There is no distinction in colour between my incoming and outgoing messages...they are all in grey and white. How do I get colour so that I can see them?

    • Which messaging app are you using? The default message app or hangouts or third party apps?

        • there are no settings for the style of the default messaging app, i.e., you actually cannot change the look of the messages.

You can try to reset the app in Settings--Apps--All --messaging, tap clear cache and then tap clear data.

You can also use Hangouts as the default SMS app.

        • Sorry I didn't realise I was on someone else's posting....this is my first time asking quesions.

  • Hi Simon:

Step 5 is very fast, almost instantaneous... Is it normal? The phone works apparently fine. Have to test it longer.

  • Hi Simon,
Could you please provide the blog which relates to OTG connectivity ?

    Thanks & Regards,
    Zaheer

    • OTG is a standardized technology. Except some USB forums (too technical for us), it is seldom discussed.

Do you have any specific problem?

  • Hi, I was able to reach till Step 5. now its already 10 mins but it is not moving further and still showing qe 0/1 - wiping cache --
What shall I do if the phone doesnt boot automatically. also, can I keep my phone on charging while doing this excercise?

    • Clearing cache partition may take 20+ mins. Just be patient.

Yes, you can put it on the charger while doing this although it's not recommended.

If you cannot wait fire it or it takes more than 30 mins to clear cache partition, you can simply reboot the phone and try again later.

      • by the way, I just did a restart by holding the power button Plus Volume down button for 10 seconds. But that didnt help. I am still not able to get the option of answering or rejecting the call.

        • Not sure. But you can try it in safe mode.

Press and hold power button until you see power option on the screen. Tap and hold Power off until it changes to Reboot to safe mode, tap OK. Moto G will reboot into safe mode. You can test it in safe mode.

      • Hi simon, thanks for your reply. The process was done in approx 15mins.
But my phone is still working slow and I have found only a marginal difference after clearing cache partition. It still takes quite a lot of time to even open Contacts, Settings, Call history and other apps like whatsap just to name a few.
Till Kitkat, everything was working fine.
Can you please suggest a solution?

        • Rebooted my Moto G in Safe mode, tried calling it from another number but still I am not able to get the option of answering or rejecting the calls. The problem is still there Sir!

          • You probably have to backup your data and reset the phone. You can also visit local Motorola service center to check the phone.

        • How to reboot the phone? Does that mean a simple restart or something else?
No, the screen does not turn on when the phone rings.
          Please help

          • press and hold power button. You should get the power option to power off. Then power on the phone. You can also hold the power button until the phone reboots.

        • thanks for the reply, I shall do it.
Also, after clearing this cache partition I am experiencing a new problem. I am unable to pick calls though the phone plays the ringtone for incoming calls and shows the call as 'missed' later. It does not show anything on screen by which I can pick the call. Kindly help. Thanks.

        • Hi.. as per your advise I will try for a factory reset. But can you help me to know how to take a back up of contacts and Gallery? The normal Backup option does not include a backup of those.

  • Works greatly.. As you said in comment, for some moto G mobile it takes 10-15 mins to clear cache partition.

  • Hi Simon, thanks for this blog. I bought a "new" Moto G (1st gen) about a month ago. Last week I updated to Lollipop. Today, the phone was running incredibly slow, taking a lot of time to catch up, not loading widgets, etc. I deleted some apps, cleared the cache, and it made no difference. I found your instructions on clearing the cache partition and followed them (thank you - the instructions were super easy!). After the reboot, the phone was marginally faster, but still lagging, so I decided on a factory reset, instead of pulling out my hair! When I went to reset it using the "settings" function, I pressed "erase all data" and it wouldn't progress from there! It's like HAL has taken over my phone! However, thanks to your info above, I was able to factory reset manually. Holding my breath that this fixes the lollipop issues.

        • It was quite easy. I did it in a single try. There is a slight performance improvement, but battery backup became even worse. Can tell me how to manually recalibrate battery? Because the process I knew, that didn't work.

          • You need check whether the phone enters deep sleep state, whether it's awaken by some apps.

For battery calibration, you just drain battery until the phone dies. Then charge it full.

          • No, my phone doesn't stay in deep sleep. I think this battery draining is the OS problem. After all it's a soak test version. By the way, I installed a bug fix update, and cleared cache partition again. Performance is much faster now. Let's see what happens with the battery performance.

          • if your phone is awaken all the time, you need force close the offending app. You can find it in Settings--battery. tap the apps in the list, find the keep awake time.

You can also reboot the phone.

  • Hi,
I have wiped that cache partition in my MotoG(1st gen) and my device started to perform faster than it had become after the update. But as soon as I restarted my phone at the time of boot up it started to install updates all of a sudden and my device was again back to square one. So I decided to wipe cache partition once again. What do you suggest to be done this time so that, those "automatic updates" could be stopped.

    • Not sure about the auto updates. It can be the leftover of previous update. Occasinally, the system may not clean some files. In this case, you should apply these updates. But it should be just a one-time issue.

A few times, it could be update for Google services. But it should not slow down the phone.

Anyway, you can try to reboot the phone again to check.

  • my moto g first gen shows headsets connected , even after removing headsets causing lots of problem while calling.

  • Hi,
After following these steps (with lollipop installed) too my Moto G2 is still running slow and there are too many crashes. My cache was wiped in just a second, so I suspect that it actually didn't wiped out. Please tell if there is any other thing I can do.

    • You can try it again.

If it's still too slow, you may have to backup your data and do a factory data reset.

  • Simon... like I said in my first comment, the update just downloaded, not installed. I have not allowed lollipop to install. I am asking is there any way I can delete the download and if so where would I go within the phone to erase the download?

    • You cannot delete the downloaded update files by default because the permission settings for such files. They are different from other downloaded files. You can visit local motorola service center to get help.

  • i have a problem regarding moto g 1st gen.......the play music wont stop when incoming call s coming.....my phone s in silent mode

  • Hi, I had a problem with a Moto G 2nd gen. It froze as I was using it, then restarted over and over not beyond the Motorola white screen. Then I read about wiping the cache, but when I try it, it restarts again. What can I do?

    • It sounds like due to some corrupted files or hardware problems. You may have to visit local motorola service center indicated in the warranty card. It should be covered by the warranty.

  • Hello, I am using a Moto x 2nd gen xt1097. The lollipop update downloaded, but I have not allowed it to install. Is there any way I can delete the file that downloaded and what would I look for? Thanks.

      • No... after all of the negative I have heard about Lollipop, I am thinking I may want to stay with 4.4.4. The interface description colors etc. has me hesitant and then the performance on top. Just considering uninstalling the download if possible.

        • There is no easy way for you to roll back (you need the correct ROM for your device). The local motorola service center may help you flash back without affecting warranty.

If you want to use this phone for next 9-12 months, I would recommend you stay on lollipop.

  • Hi. I am using MOTO G 1st Gen with Android 5.0.2. Since yesterday, my google account seems to have stopped synching. The account page says "Sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly", and because of that all the Google apps from Gmail to Play Music to Play store have stopped working. The phones gets hanged every 10-15 mins and I have to reboot to start it up again. I've tried clearing the cache partition but the problems still exists. I guess the only resort now is to Factory Reset, which I really don't want to.

    Please help on this matter.

    • It could be a temporal problem on Google servers. It should only some Google apps.

It's not necessary to reset the phone. The problem should be gone once Google fix the issue.

  • Works like charm. Thanks for a such detailed article bro.
Am sure this will improve battery peformance on my moto g 1stgen.

  • Works like a charm, the annoying lag when opening apps seems to be gone.
I'd still love to go back to KitKat though...

    • Just like other smartphones, there is no way to roll back once updated.

If you still want to go back to Kitkat, you can check local Motorola service center. They may help you to flash the old ROM. But this depends on service center because it is not a standard service in the warranty.

  • Sadness. Everyone reports such good success with this method, but I cannot get past the android on his back. I read through all the comments and tried all combos of buttons. Any further hints for a moto x? Many thanks and lots of good karma to you for helping so many users.

  • Thanks, working like charm..i'm seeing ma moto g performance same as kitkat version that i had. awesome.

one question, should i clear the cache after some period of usage (1 month or 2 month) ? or not necessary. all i want is performance should be keep same level.

thank you, suggestion would be more appreciate!

    • Clearing cache partition is only needed after a firmware update. Normally, it is not necessary to run it often. But it should not cause any damages to your phone if you run it once every a few months, it is just not necessary.

If your phone performance is getting worse, you can try to reboot the phone. Often the problem is caused by memory leak of some some apps. A simple reboot should solve the issue.

If you have battery drain issue, you need find out the cause.

  • thanks a ton, after lollipop update my MOT G started working slowly but now it is back to it original spped, greta article, keep up the good work, can you provide some tricks to keep it fast and running

    • Moto G was well optimized already. You don't need any other apps to boost the performance. Such apps will only show down your moto g.

if you sometimes feel the lag after using a few days, you can try the greenify app. It's free on play store.

  • It took me approx 12.5 mins to complete clearing the cache. The reboot time of phone has reduced, also when i used to open the downloaded and running apps in settings, there would lot of time lag and now it has reduced, though it has not came back to the speed when the phone was new. overall the phone performance is better though again it is not as good as it was brand new but nevertheless it is better. Thanks for the detailed explanation on how to clear the cache which any layman can understand whereas in moto website it's difficult to understand.

I have one more question, how frequently can we clear cache this way? is it recommended to clear cache this way frequently?

    • It's not necessary to clear cache partitions often, although you can do it at any time.

Normally you may clear cache partition after a major firmware update.

      • Thank you Simon.
Fur further speeding up my phone (Moto G - 1st Gen) is there any way or any app?

        • Just wanted to say that there IS an app that will boost performance more. It is called Clean Master by Cheetah Mobile ( I would not recommend any of its other products). I also use DU battery saver, and if u use it right it works great. thx for the detailed step by step instructions though, really helped with some lag issues after AndroidL update

        • Don't use any such apps. They only make the phone slower.

Moto G is a decent budget phone. In its price range, it should be performs better than other similarly-priced phones. Of course, it only has 1Gb RAM, and middle-range quad core processor, it cannot be as fast as Moto X or HTC One M8/9 or Galaxy S6. But it should be faster than Galaxy S4 for most apps due to its light weight in skin.

  • Clearing the Cache took 12.5 mins approx, phone re-booting time is reduced, when i go to settings and click on apps, there was lag to display the downloaded and running apps, now the lag is reduce but hasn't gone 100% as it was before when the phone was new. overall phone performance is better but did not become fast like it was when the phone was new. but, thanks for this solution which helped me to make my phone faster. and, by the way, you have explained very well in a detailed manner with snap shots which any laymen can understand, where as Moto website has given this explanation in just a paragraph which only geeks can understand. Thanks again, Kudos! keep up the good work!

  • I am trying to enter in recovery mode (by following your described steps) but is restarting every time....
    Moto G 2014 (XT 1068)

      • I managed to get the dead android and to wipe the cache. The key is to push the power button and volume down while starting (android logo). It cleared the cache in minutes and restarting without any issue.
        Thanks.

  • works a dream. Thanks.
I had asked Motorola how to fix this and they insisted on KitKat instructions, so your update method essential.

  • Mine took about 8 minutes to wipe. Then restarting took too much time. I hope it works faster now.

  • Hello,

Fed up with lollipop , doing Cache clearing now...as instructed above.it says wiping cache,,,
Am i need to worry about chat logs and gallery files and received file. Are they safe? Even after this process....

    • Clearing cache partition doesn't affect your files.

Fir anything important, you should always backup.

  • My moto g 1st Generation is taking too long to detect wife after updating lolipop 5.0. the same even after clearing cache. any advice ?

    • it may be also related to router settings. There are no settings to make Moto G detect WiFi faster.

      • Thanks Mr. Simon, I don't think so, before lolipop it was working well . Even the saved wife is taking more than 5 minutes to connect...I have tried with many wife which already saven in my motog but the same.

        Cheers,

        • MAC, funny lol jk....may b I would try with your w**** as I don't have it yet. Check yours have signal strength to detect mine and let me know ?
          Gigeesh

        • Gigeesh Sir I suggest you try to detect your wife yourself or hire a private detective. I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure that's not that the phone is made for. XD XD XD (sorry the joke was too hard to resist)

        • Not sure. Usually it should be not more than 1 or 2 mins.

You may backup the phone and perform a factory data reset.

  • Only front camera is working.. All of sudden even that switch to camera option not coming.. Tried clearing cache as suggested by going to settings and camera clear cache.. But that's not clearing... So I clicked on force stop.. Now that's also disabled.. Still problem is same.. I tried installing camera 360 still I am not getting other side.. Only front camera..

  • Bloody awesome mate. I had my G for only a day and it upgraded to turn into molasses. I'll sure be remembering these steps.
    Cheers.

  • I have a prob. I was trying to explore some app, may be any .do...in between I found some thing like speak on (I guess) ...clicked it and phone started speaking whenever i clicked on a particular button...for ex, when I pressed, power off it said power off and so on.. now i am not able to even open the phone...it speaks whenever I touch anywhere on screen. I tried wiping cache...I waited till battery drained off....nothing works...what will I do to set right without losing my files et. Pl help!

  • My phone has been working very good after the lollipop update but still i cleared cache partition as my phone used take very long to switch on which is still the case as it takes almost 1 minute 10 seconds to restart even after clearing cache. Is this a standard among all moto phones as my earlier cheaper phones which were nowhere Moto standards even they used to restart within 30-35 seconds.

    • Normally, you should not worry about the time for restarting. If you have SD card, it will take extra time to scan the files when restarting. It is not necessary to restart the phone often anyway.

You should check the actual performance when using apps.

  • My Moto g 2 is having problems with SD CARD "it shows SD card removed Unexpectedly while SDCARD is inside the Phone Any Solution ??

  • not sure if it works... i still feel the delays after wiping off the cache !
just go to developer options -> turn all three animation options to "Animation off".

simply you have to sacrifice the animation till you get the Android L 5.1 update. i have Android 5.0.1
    Peace !!

  • Thank you Simon... Pls let me know the guide URL once u create it for OTG... I'll be waiting... :-)

    • Hi Simon,

Is there any update on OTG guide..? If I Unmount the OTG (Sandisk ultra dual 16GB) from mobile, it disables the application stored in SD card. It works only if I power off and power on the mobile or unmount and mount the SD card.
      Please suggest..

      • I already have the screenshots. But I need do more testing with a few more devices.

Not sure about the issue. I didn't experience this problem. You should unmount the OTG storage after using it.

        • Yes. I am doing it... SD card apps works fine untill the OTG is connected in mobile. The problem is only after unmounting the OTG. I think while unmounting the OTG, the mobile is unmounting SD card as well. Not sure about it.

          • Not sure. I tested several devices. There are no such issues.

Please note, you should unmount the otg drive in settings - storage. Do not use other apps for the job.

  • still

    Formatting /Cache....
    Cache wipe complete.

How to know cache wipe completed in moto g2

    • It already shows you "Cache wipe complete". You should also notice the menu options also jumped to reboot the phone.

Wiping cache partition on Moto G can take somewhere between a few seconds to 20 mins.

        • if it shows wiping cache partition is completed, you can use reboot the phone now in the boot menu, or just press and hold the power button to reboot.

  • Dude! You saved my phone! In fact I am wondering why Google/Motorola decided not to auto-launch the cleanup process as part of the system update. The difference is staggering! I now have an even better phone than when I bought it, and the battery-life is back to 2 days too. Thanks, mate! P.S. Cleanup time: 12 minutes.

  • Dont we have reboot option in Moto G (2nd Gen) lollipop OS?
If I press power button, it gives only Power Off option and if I press power off button for 5 to 10 seconds it shows " reboot in Safe mode " option only.

    • You can just hold power button to reboot. But it's not recommended. It's better to power off, then power on.

      • Thank You.... I have another query regarding OTG connectivity in Moto G (2014). Can I ask it in the same forum ? And I would also inform you that, I tried Cache clearing as per the above steps and it got wiped just in 2 seconds, why is it so ?

        • Thank you Simon… Pls let me know the guide URL once u create it for OTG… I’ll be waiting… :-)

        • OTG is fully supported in Moto G 2014. I will prepare a guide for this.

The time need to finish clearing cache partition varies, from a few seconds to 20 mins.

  • Hi, just wanted to say thank you for your guide, which came up pretty high on a Google search for "moto G first generation lollipop very slow". My 1st gen Moto G has become almost unusable after the upgrade - it seemed OK for a week or so, but then has been incredibly laggy, programs crashing/becoming unresponsive etc etc. Just followed your detailed and great instructions, cache wiped, rebooted and already within 2 minutes of using, things are MUCH MUCH BETTER. Thank you!

  • It worked well. Step by step instruction was great. Initial response is good. Hoping it will continue. One question : Will we require to do the same when ever system slowness occurs or once we do any major system upgrade!? Apologies if my question is silly :)

    • Glad to know it works for you.

Cleaning cache partition is needed only after major android update. But if you want, you can do it at any time. It normally only take a few mins. There are no side effects on your system.

  • Thanks for this wonderful guide. My Moto G 1st Gen had become very slow, contacts was sluggish, crashed at times. I also faced difficulty sometimes to place calls unless i powered on/off once. Opening of all apps were lagging a lot.

After reading your guide and comments above, I uninstalled some apps, deleted most of the pictures/ videos and cleared cache partition. Now the Moto G works much faster. Thanks once again for all the people who shared their experiences.

  • when i open gallery in moto 2nd generation the message displayed on the screen is "gallery needs to clear temporary storage to improve performance".please provide the steps to overcome this problem

  • Just tried this on my Moto G 1 gen , with Lollipop and text typing has lost the lag it had picked up after upgrade , wonderful , many thanks

  • Hi - I tried this, but I still don't have mobile data. I'd really rather not do a factory reset if there are other alternatives. I have a Moto G. Any thoughts?

  • Formatting /cache... is taking too long.
It's like 6 min now since it started and not yet done.

    Any idea what's happening ?

Is that expected ?? Does any one had the same issue ??

    Please help

  • My phone is stuck in boot cycle since last 2 days. tried all options and was able to reach cache wipe (very tough on a non-techie like me). It still doesn't boots fully. proceeding to a service center soon. Any steps that can save me a trip there?

    • You can try to reset the phone. I guess the guys in the service centre will try it as well.

But you will lose all settings and files in the internal storage.

  • Pleas Update Step 4 to below (As many of facing problem to go to next step.....)
from the "No Command" screen (Android figure lying on his back), press and hold the Power button then press and release the Volume Up button to display the menu options.

  • Thanks for the wonderful tip. Just did it. Lets see how responsive the phone becomes now. First impression is good though.

  • First impressions seem positive. Phone was slower than a mo fo before. Thanks for posting

  • Awesomely brilliant guide, thank you very much for taking the time to write this and sharing. Much appreciated. please advice us what is happening in the phone while doing cache partition

    • Cache partition stores caches (usually optimized for the phone, not just a shadow copy) of systems apps and user apps, and associated settings. Very often, you are accessing the app in cache partition, instead of the real app files.

Of course, cache partition also stores some other temp files.

Clearing cache partition will force the system to rebuild it. This can eliminate some leftovers of some apps, especially after updating the system.

      • Hi, after the dead andriod, i cant moe ahead, either nothing happens or the phone re-boots...please help

        • after getting the dead Android, you can press and hold the power button for 2-3 seconds, don't release the power button, press the volume up button, now release both power button and volume up button.

If your Moto G reboots, it means you hold the power button too long.

If nothing happens, it means you released the power button before press volume up.

  • Is this fundamentally different from clearing the Cached data via?
Settings > Storage > Cached data > Ok
It seemed to do the trick, so haven't tried this detailed sequence.

    • This option doesn't seem to be available in lollipop. Well, I can't see it obviously.

      • Clearing cached data is still available in Lollipop update for Moto G. Go to Settings- storage, tap cached data, You will be asked whether you want to clear them.

Anyway, this does not affect performance or solve any problems most of the time, except temporally (only temporally) slightly increase the available storage.

        • (1) Doesn't clear the cache?!
After following this guide to clear the cache (which took 2s), I then looked at the Settings/Storage/Cached Data = 413MB, does that mean it wasn't cleared?. So then I tap and 'Clear cached data', OK, now 3MB!

          (2) But anyway, problem still not fixed:
wifi can't see router on channel 13... right away.
Actually it connects after 10mins, with exclaimation mark, but no internet.
Then can set a static IP will force a connection as a temporay fix for that

          [Moto G 1st gen, Lollipop 5.0.2]

          • 1. This is normal. Cache partition are individual partitions. The cache files you cleared in Settings--Storage are located in a different partition (normal phone storage).

            2. You should avoid channels 12-14 in your wireless router for Moto G. These 3 channels may have problems with some US products, as they are not allowed in US.

    • They are different. Cached data you mentioned are temporal files for run time. A reboot will refresh these files.

Cache partition has a different set of cached files including cached settings. A reboot does not affect these files.

  • My phone has a broken volume rocker micro-switch (from a drop).. Is there any other way to get around this, so I can clear cache?

    • Probably not. Such operations requires hardware button because the screen doesn't respond to touch at this stage.

      • From what i understand, doing a factory reset would do the job too, though. Is this correct?

        • Yes, but factory data reset will erase all your files and settings. It is normally used as the last solution.

  • Fantastic...it was driving me crazy how slow my phone had become...great site, terrific help thanks

  • I tried this on my Moto G(1st Gen) it is stuck on Step5 , Its been 20 minutes and I'm still seeing **Formatting/cache...* {Without the stars} Please, Help me ! :/

  • Thank you.

Faith in my MotoG is restored. I was regretting taking the lollipop upgrade till I found this. It makes such a difference.

Should this procedure not ideally be automatic somehow as part of the software push?

    • It's not included in the android update procedure because it is needed when updating apps in the last stage of the lollipop update.

However, when you do a factory data reset, cache partition will be cleared.

  • i have tried this 4 or 5 times but every time I get to stage 4 (After seeing Motorola splash page, I get the dead Android but has 'No command' in red) I press buttons as instructed but phone just reboots, any ideas ?

  • With my 1st generation Moto G, since Lollipop upgrade the pulse notification no longer works for received emails, only texts. Any ideas for remedying this annoyance?

  • ......wiping cache....Formating / cache.........approx. 7 minutes for me.........1st impression is it seems a bit quicker to respond to taps etc

  • Awesomely brilliant guide, thank you very much for taking the time to write this and sharing. Much appreciated.

  • after update lollipop, my moto g repeat on-off
teach me, return to kikat or tell me any method to fix problem plaese
(i had clear cache, factory reset but not fixed )

    • If factory reset doesn't solve the problem, you may have to visit the local motorola service centre.

You may try to reboot the phone into safe mode to see whether the problem is caused by apps you installed.

        • Tap and hold power button for 2 -3 seconds. You should get the power off option on the screen. Tap and hold power off. You then have the option to boot the phone into safe mode.

  • I have an issue on ringtones, sometimes in first sim the ringtones doesn't work, sometimes in the second sim. After wiping the cache, nothing changed.

  • Thanks for the Guide. Looks like clearing the cache helped. Step 4 gave me little trouble. It took 4 attempts get Wipe Cache partition option tried couple of combination w.r.t seconds. It took approximate 14 minutes to clear the cache. After clearing the cache below are the issues which got resolved

    1. Reboot is fast.
    2. No hang while typing messages
    3. No hang while using the camera
    4. Corporate email use to crash when I double click on an email. This is also solved
    5. Call Log is much faster
    6. Opening and closing of any application is much faster

    Thanks again,
    Prashanth

  • Hi Simon,

I am not able to go into the recovery mode menu(Step 4). My phone is rebooting again after pressing power button for 4Sec and then pressing volume up button and releasing both of them together.

    Please help.

    Regards,
    Sudarshan.

  • I have a 2 week old Moto G (second generation), and had no problems until today. It kept dropping and forgetting my wifi network connection seconds after connecting. I tried many things, including changing settings and clearing the cache partition, NONE of which worked. But after the SECOND time of clearing the cache partition it finally works again and holds the wifi connection (10 minutes so far)! No idea why it didn't work first time cause I followed all the steps and all of the instructions above and exactly the same thing happened on the screen as the second time.

    • There are no known problems for sim card 2 detection as I know. You may try to power off the phone. Then power on again. Please also make sure the SIM card is inserted tightly.

If the problem persists, you may have to visit local Motorola service centre to check the phone.

  • cache still not cleared.... displaying formatting/cache... for last 10 mins and also showing qe 0/1 instead of qe 0/0

  • I prefer a factory reset. It just makes sure everything works fine. People should be using google drive and google photos to back up their stuff anyways. Data can be backed up easily done connecting phone to PC. I can reset my phone in 15 mins and I get everything back (if backed up on drive and photos obviously)

  • I have not been successful with the 4 th step.... After holding the power button for 4-5 and then the volume up bottn ... Still displaying the dead android ..

      • Guys for lollipop, to go thru step 4, just press power on button at the android exclamation screen for 3 secs and while holding the power on button, just tap the volume up key...

        • I had just about given up on step 4 but after the 20th or so time over a period of weeks trying now and then it worked! So the power button for 3 seconds (no more or it will turn on) and tapping the volume up did the trick.
